  • Brilliant books I blurbed in 2024

One of the things I enjoy most about my job – aside from the writing itself – is sometimes getting a chance to read another author’s book early, and even offer a quote/blurb to be used by the author or publisher to help promote it.

As I was looking back over my reading this year, there were so many of these brilliant books that I read and loved – so much so that I gladly offered a blurb to 16 (15 listed here, and one which hasn’t been announced yet). I thought it would be a nice little wrap-up of 2024 to share these with you all in one place, so here they are (in no particular order)!

    Lie or Die – A J Clack

Ten strangers trapped in a television studio

    Forty-two remote cameras

    Five dead bodies

    One rule: Trust no one

When a casting call is announced for new reality TV show Lie or Die, Kass is tricked into auditioning by her best friend. Big Brother meets Mafia, Lie or Die pits contestants against each other as they try to discover who is a murderous agent and who is an innocent player. But when contestants start to turn up dead (the real kind, not the fake kind), Kass realises that not being eliminated and winning the game is the least of her worries. No longer a game of truth and lies, Kass and her friends are in a fight for survival. ‘Reality’ just got very real.

My blurb: ‘The Traitors meets Knives Out in Lie or Die — a twisty, pulse-pounding, locked-room thriller. It kept me guessing all the way to the blistering finale!’

The Deadsoul Project – Dan Smith

In 1977, the Alpine Heights tower block where Kyle Dempsey and his sister Lauren live with their mum and stepdad becomes the site of a horrific infestation. Believing their stepdad, Connor, to have been killed in action in Northern Ireland, Kyle and Lauren are shocked to find him at home in their flat. But Connor is changed. Following a secret military experiment, he has been infected with some kind of alien life form, which is using him as a host to infect the other residents of the tower block with gruesome results.

My blurb: ‘Fantastically creepy! Fans of Wranglestone and the Dread Wood series will love this. A pulse-pounding start to a brilliant new series.’

You’ve Awoken Her – Ann Davila Cardinal

All Gabi wants is to spend the summer in his room, surrounded by his Funkos and books, but with his mom traveling, his bags are packed for the last place he wants to visit—the Hamptons. Staying with his best friend should have him willing to peek out of his cave, but ever since Ruth’s nouveau riche family moved, their friendship has been off.

Surrounded by mansions, country clubs, and Ruth’s new boyfriend, Frost Thurston—the axis that Hampton society orbits around—it doesn’t take long for Gabi to feel completely out of place. But when he witnesses a woman being pulled under the ocean water, and no one—not the police or anyone else in the Hamptons—seems to care, Gabi starts to wonder if maybe the beachside town’s bad vibes are more real than he thought.

As the “accidental” deaths and drownings begin to climb, Gabi knows he’ll need proof to convince Ruth they’re all in danger. And while the Thurston family name keeps rising to the top, along with every fresh body, what’s worst is that all the signs point to something lurking beneath the water—something with tentacles and a thirst for blood. Can Gabi figure out how the two are intertwined and put an end to the string of deaths…before becoming the water’s next victim?

My blurb: ‘Fans of Those We Drown will adore You’ve Awoken Her with its Lovecraftian sea monster, ancient folklore and wise-cracking protagonist who finds himself swimming in very dangerous waters. Cthulhu is having her brat summer in the Hamptons this year, and I am here for it!’

I Will Never Leave You – Kara A Kennedy

Maya has always known that spirits exist – even dabbled in light rituals – but she never imagined she’d need to banish her ex-girlfriend.

When Alana’s ghost turns up at her door, Maya is terrified. Their breakup was hardly amicable, and now Alana, desperate to come back to life, is threatening her: if Maya doesn’t help her possess a girl in town, Alana will frame Maya for her murder.

Maya must now face the ultimate decision. Will she forgive Alana and help bring her back to life, or can she face her fears and banish her ex forever?

My blurb: ‘A must-read for fans of The Taking of Jake LivingstonI Will Never Leave You delivers the perfect balance of supernatural suspense and emotional gut-punch. Real, raw and all-consuming.’

How to Survive a Horror Movie – Scarlett Dunmore

Horror movie enthusiast Charley is determined to keep a low profile when she’s enrolled at a girls’ boarding school on a remote island. That is, until someone starts killing off her senior class! From elaborate scare tactics to severed heads in fridges, Charley has found herself at the centre of a teen horror movie. And that’s not the only alarming thing that’s happening – she’s now seeing the ghosts of her former classmates!

Haunted by her peers, and with everyone beginning to suspect her, Charley decides to do something about it. She and her only best friend Olive are going to solve the murders and find out who’s killing off the class before graduation. Charley just needs those pesky ghosts to shut up and give her a hand…

My blurb: ‘Toss some Skittles in your popcorn and settle in for the horror-comedy read of the season! Twisty and delightfully gory, How to Survive a Horror Movie is the perfect addition to any Halloween reading list.’

    Old Wounds – Logan-Ashley Kisner

Erin and Max are two trans kids, just trying to get to California. Max is desperate to finally be able to transition, and Erin is longing to understand why she’s on this trip to begin with, after Max suddenly broke up with her two years earlier.

But when they find themselves stranded – and eventually separated – in the creepy woods of rural middle-America, they suddenly have much bigger problems.

First, there’s the creature that, according to legend, feeds on girls, hunting them through the shadows.
And then there are the locals, who are searching for a female sacrifice. If either of them hope to survive to see the sunrise, Erin and Max will have to come together and stop running: from their attackers, from each other, and, ultimately, from themselves.

My blurb: ‘Old Wounds is a riveting, spine-chilling horror story that will shred your nerves and shatter your heart in the best and worst ways. A phenomenal debut.’

    The Madness – Dawn Kurtagich

With one unexpected email from her estranged best friend, Lucy, Mina Murray’s carefully curated life is turned upside down. Leaving behind her psychiatric practice in London, she returns home to the windswept shores of Wales. Faced with everything she’s left behind, she soon discovers that Lucy’s symptoms mirror those of her mysterious amnesiac patient hundreds of miles away.

With nothing but an untreatable sickness connecting the two women, and with Lucy’s life on the line, Mina finds herself asking questions and being drawn ever-deeper into a web of secrets, missing girls, and the powerful, nameless force at its center—one that has been haunting her for years.

As terrible, ancient truths begin to reveal themselves, Mina prepares to confront her own darkest secrets, and with them, an evil beyond comprehension. Together with a group of smart, savvy women, Mina seizes one last, desperate chance to stop the cycle that began so long ago. But there are dangers to inviting the attentions of what might not be a man, but a monster….

My blurb: ‘The Turn of the Key meets Underworld in this gloriously chilling, feminist take on Dracula. Set against a brooding Welsh backdrop with lush imagery hiding its darkly beating heart, The Madness will stay with you long past the final page. Truly stunning!’

    The Virtue Season – L M Nathan

Manon Pawlak has just turned eighteen, a debutant at the start of the Virtue Season: a process that will result in a match with a suitable genetic mate. Her best friend, Agatha, has been decommissioned, forbidden to partake in the season and unite with the boy who has had her heart since they were children.

When Manon’s mother wades out into the waters of Penn Vale with stones sewn into the lining of her coat, Manon’s genetic purity is called into question and she’s forced to rely on the fisherman’s son, Wick, to keep her secret. But as they dance, the truth about their world starts to unravel, and Manon finds herself at the centre of it all. And the council is watching.

My blurb: ‘With shades of Only Ever Yours and The Handmaid’s TaleThe Virtue Season is a chilling, romantic, and utterly compelling dystopia that swept me away like a tidal wave. This book will hook you in and not let go until long after the final page. A simply stunning debut.’

The Last Thing You’ll Hear – Jan Dunning

Wren and Lark are rivals first and sisters second, so when mysterious music producer, Adam, and his DJ prodigy, Spinner, come to their small town, the game is on to impress.

Lark is soon taken under Adam’s wing, but as she’s pulled deeper into his web, distancing herself from friends and family, Wren starts to suspect that there’s a more sinister side to Adam. And when the sisters get a chance to perform at Enrapture the most talked-about festival of the summer, suddenly there is a lot to lose…

Can Wren put her own ambitions aside to save her sisters life?

One thing’s for sure: after this summer, nothing will ever be the same again.

My blurb: ‘This slick summer thriller is exactly my jam! Exploring themes of toxic masculinity, the allure of fame, and the sometimes-brittle bonds of sisterhood, The Last Thing You’ll Hear will draw you in like a lullaby and hold you spellbound. Totally gripping!’

They Watch From Below – Katya De Becerra

When Addie Velde receives an invitation to attend an early orientation program at the University of the Arches, she eagerly accepts. After all, the Arches—with its idyllic beachside campus—is her mom’s beloved alma mater, and there’s nothing Addie wants more than to leave her own mark. But from the moment she arrives on campus and moves into her gloomy dorm, nicknamed The Crypt, Addie realizes there are more sinister secrets to uncover than sandy days in her future.

Addie’s search for answers launches her straight into the heart of an old campus mystery which to this day keeps students and faculty wary of the shadowy “Buried Ones”, believed to be the omens of death.

A vanished professor, an occult society, and the chance her family was involved pushes her investigation into dangerous territory. Will she lose herself to the Buried Ones or end their sinister reign once and for all?

My blurb: ‘Stunningly sinister, They Watch from Below is The Girl from the Well meets Pan’s Labyrinth with added dark academia vibes. I couldn’t look away from this chillingly spellbinding read!’

Let’s Split Up – Bill Wood

When hot “it-couple” Brad and Shelley are brutally murdered in a manor on the edge of town, a group of teen friends investigate.

Set in Sanera, a small community in California where rumour spreads as fast as the fire on the day of the killings, the theory is the old ghoul who haunts the house after his own murder hundreds of years ago has finally taken revenge.

As Cam, Jonesy, Amber and new-girl Buffy investigate, the rumour feels closer to the truth than they ever dared think possible, and as they enter the mansion themselves, the idea of splitting up to find evidence will prove to be either the best … or worst decision of all…

My blurb: ‘Let’s Split Up is a creepy, mysterious and fun read, and brings big Point Horror energy to a new generation. A great addition to any Halloween reading list.’

The Witch in the Woods – Jennifer Killick

Welcome to Hazard. An ordinary town where strangeness is a way of life. A town where sink holes appear with no warning, where people go missing way too often and where things really DO go bump in the night …

To Travis and his classmates, Hazard is home. But when they’re set a school project to investigate the history of the town, they soon realise that something strange and alien lies beneath Hazard. What can they learn from their investigations into the mysterious witch in the woods? And – if the witch really does exist – will they make it home to tell the tale …?

My blurb: ‘The Witch in the Woods has everything you could hope to find in a Jennifer Killick masterpiece: white-knuckle twists, brilliant banter and the most terrifying chills. It’ll scare your pants off!’

The Wild Huntress – Emily Lloyd-Jones

Every five years, two kingdoms take part in a Wild Hunt. Joining is a bloody risk, and even the most qualified hunters can suffer the deadliest fates. Still, hundreds gamble their lives to participate—all vying for the Hunt’s life-changing prize: a magical wish granted by the Otherking.

BRANWEN possesses a gift no other human has: the ability to see and slay monsters. She’s desperate to cure her mother’s sickness, and the Wild Hunt is her only option.

GWYDION is the least impressive of his magically talented family, but with his ability to control plants and his sleight of hand, he’ll do whatever it takes to keep his cruel older brother from becoming a tyrant.

PRYDERI is prince-born and monster-raised. Deep down, the royal crown doesn’t interest him—all he wants is to know where he belongs.

A trickster, a prince, and a wild huntress—all in pursuit of the Champion’s prize. If they band together against the monstrous creatures within the woods, they have a chance to win. But nothing is guaranteed. After all, all are fair game in love and the Hunt.

My blurb: ‘The Wild Huntress is phenomenal, packed with adventure, magic and folklore – it has to be the best fantasy I’ve read this year. I would happily immerse myself in Emily Lloyd-Jones’s wonderful writing every day!’

    The Thorns – Dawn Kurtagich

Touch a line, you break your spine.

Stacey is the dusty air, the cracked soil, the drought. To thirteen-year-old Bethany Sloane, she’s everything.

Abandoned by her mother at a remote African boarding school, Bethany will do anything to stay in Stacey’s good graces. And that means learning the rules of each twisted game.

Touch a crack, you break your back.

Years later, Bethany is a bestselling author. Disabled now, she can’t remember what happened back in the bush. But there’s no mistaking Stacey Preston’s name in her inbox.

    Glassy, glassy, cut my arsey.

That email brings Bethany’s childhood rushing back. The Glass Man was just a story the Thorns invented, a game of wits. But every game has its rules―and consequences for breaking them. To stay alive this round, Bethany needs to play right into Stacey’s hands.

My blurb: ‘Another Dawn Kurtagich masterpiece, The Thorns left me wrecked, mind-blown, and in absolute awe! To anyone who has had a Stacey in their life: you will get this. To everyone else: be glad that you don’t, but be prepared for the Thorns to burrow deep into your soul anyway.’

The Love Interest – Helen Comerford

Seventeen-year-old Jenna Ray has just been saved by the world’s newest superhero, Blaze. And, in the eyes of the public, that means one thing: Jenna Ray has been cast as the Love Interest.

No. Not happening. Not if Jenna has anything to say about it (even if Blaze is actually quite sweet and cute).

But her plans to defy the HPA (the Heroics and Power Authority) and turn down this new role are thwarted when the Villains begin to take an interest in her and offer a life-changing proposition; become Blaze’s Love Interest, while avoiding catching feelings for him, to uncover the HPA’s secret plans and find her missing mum.

To make matters even more complicated, just as Jenna starts to embrace her new-found career, she discovers she might be more on the side of the superheroes than she ever imagined …

My blurb: ‘Marvel meets Disney’s Extraordinary in this superpowered romcom that flips every hero trope with hilarious consequences. Taking on killer pigeons and mutant squirrels while fighting the patriarchy, Jenna Ray is the hero we all need. A fantastically funny, full-throttle debut. I’m obsessed!’

  • 5 Random Questions with Sarah Naughton, author of You Better Watch Out

In December’s newsletter (catch up HERE if you missed it) I interviewed Sarah Naughton about her chillingly festive YA thriller, You Better Watch Out, which sees Eleri receiving increasingly threatening advent gifts from a sinister Secret Santa.

This is a fantastically gripping read for any time of the year, but especially perfect for the Christmas season!

    Enter the 5 Random Questions!

What’s the best gift you’ve ever received?

I can only think of people, which is way too worthy, so I guess I’ll say my first laptop.  My husband gave it to me for our first Christmas and I wrote The Hanged Man Rises on it.

You’re lost in the jungle. Which of your skills is most likely to help you survive?

My ability to kill without conscience in order to appropriate your food/shelter/map.

If you could trade places with any book or movie character for a day, who would you choose?

    Howl or Jonathan Strange.

    What’s your go-to karaoke song?

I am aware this is cultural appropriation, but I am particularly good at Gangsta’s Paradise.

What are your top 3 movies of all time?

It’s a Wonderful Life, The Exorcist, Guardians of the Galaxy.

    BONUS QUESTION (because it’s Christmas!)

    Describe your perfect Christmas.

I imagine it’s the same for a lot of people: to be able to go back to the Christmases of their childhood.  Growing up it was just me and my mum, but we would spend Christmases with my grandparents.  Uncle Ray and Auntie Frances would come over with a huge box full of presents for me.  They were only small things, a pen, a Curly Wurly etc, but each one was a massive dopamine hit for my 6 year old brain.  Afterwards I would sit in an armchair and listen to audio tapes of Grimm’s Fairy Tales.  I can still quote them (‘…for a hundred years, which is far longer than you or I are likely to live…’).  I might go for a walk with my lovely grandad, then later on he would fall asleep in his armchair and I would wake him up by pulling his moustache.  It was just like Josef Stalin’s and as a result I am constitutionally unable to view Stalin as anything other than a delightful, affable old darling.

  • 5 Random Questions with Emily Lloyd-Jones, author of The Wild Huntress

This month in my newsletter (catch up HERE if you missed it) I interviewed Emily Lloyd-Jones about her latest YA fantasy, The Wild Huntress, in which Branwen – a girl who can see and slay monsters – enters the wild hunt to try to win a cure for her mother’s illness, and has to join forces with a trickster and a prince to improve her chances… though she can’t trust anyone in this hunt.

I’ve been a fan of Emily’s books for years, and this latest book set in the same world as The Bone Houses and The Drowned Woods was no exception! After finding out more about The Wild Huntress, I needed more info on the author herself.

    Enter the 5 Random Questions!

What’s one talent you have that not many people know about?

I know way too many random facts, because I spend too much time on the internet looking up random history and science.

What is something you’re irrationally afraid of?

    Spiders. And mold on food.

What 3 comfort items would you take with you to a desert island?

Coffee, cats, and a phone to call for help. Also then I could listen to audiobooks.

If you could have one superpower for a day, which would you choose and what would you do with it?

I think if I could have a superpower for a day, I would love teleportation! I have so many friends and family scattered around the world, I would love to be able to spend more time with them, even if it was only for a few hours.

Would you rather explore outer space or the bottom of the ocean? Why?

Neither! Both are terrifying! But I would probably choose space instead of the ocean. Have you seen the creatures down there? Nope, nope, absolutely not.

  • 5 Random Questions with Logan-Ashley Kisner, author of Old Wounds

In the Halloween issue of my newsletter (catch up HERE if you missed it) I interviewed Logan-Ashley Kisner about his debut YA horror, Old Wounds, in which trans teens Max and Erin get trapped in a creepy, small town where the locals are determined to sacrifice them to the local monster – which only eats girls. This was a brilliant horror novel, putting a fresh spin on lots of the tropes I love most, so naturally I wanted to know more about the author himself.

    Enter the 5 Random Questions!

What was your favourite book as a teen?

Either the Series of Unfortunate Events series or anything Rick Riordan wrote from the years 2005-2014.

    What’s your go-to Halloween costume?

I’ve had the same Freddy Krueger sweater from Hot Topic since I was 18, and I haven’t let it go yet!

You have a magic ticket to spend one day anywhere in the world. Where will you go?

Assuming language and safety weren’t a barrier, I’ve always wanted to visit Armenia (family roots!)

Do you have any unusual habits?

I love lemon-filled donuts, but I have to eat the filling first. It grosses out every person I’ve ever eaten a donut around.

What will you be reading this Halloween?

My TBR pile is ridiculous, but I’m hoping to either get my hands on Kara Thomas’ The Champions or Chuck Tingle’s Camp Damascus.

  • 5 Random Questions with Kara A Kennedy, author of I Will Never Leave You

In my August newsletter (catch up HERE if you missed it) I asked Kara A Kennedy all about her supernatural YA thriller debut, I Will Never Leave You, where Maya has always been able to see ghosts, but when the ghost of her toxic ex, Alana, turns up and refuses to leave, Maya will need to find a way to make their break-up more permanent. I loved this spooky and highly original thriller, and loved learning all the behind-the-scenes info about the book. After that, I had to find out more about the author herself…

    Enter the 5 Random Questions!

Have you ever had a celebrity encounter?

Yes! I used to work at Universal Studios Hollywood and met a bunch of people there, the most notable and exciting being Emma Watson. The cast of the Shadowhunters TV show came in once and I talked to them for awhile while trying not to absolutely freak out.

Other than writing, what’s your dream job?

As a kid, I wanted to be a meteorologist, but then I realized I’d need to know math.

You have one hour to hide a body. What are you going to do?

Call my fiancee. She’d know what to do.

You’ve got 5 minutes to prepare to go on a TV talent show. What will you perform onstage?

My Hamlet monologue I’ve had memorized since AP English.

Have you ever had your fortune told, and did it come true?

A fortune teller at a renaissance faire correctly predicted, in detail, how I would do in Pitch Wars back in 2021. At the time, I figured it was totally fake, but she was exactly right. It gives me the creeps to think about!

    About Kara A Kennedy

Kara A. Kennedy has been telling ghost stories—and sometimes living them—since childhood. She holds a BA in Professional Writing from Penn State University, where she worked as a writing tutor and cultivated a love of coffee. She lives in a historic and possibly haunted home in Pennsylvania with her partner and their two cats. I Will Never Leave You is her debut novel. You can follow her on Twitter/X and Instagram

Don’t miss it!

  • 5 Random Questions with L M Nathan, author of The Virtue Season

In this month’s newsletter (check it out HERE if you missed it) I interviewed L M Nathan about unsettlingly brilliant YA dystopian The Virtue Season, where 18-year-old Manon is a debutante entering the Virtue Season – a time when she will be matched with her genetic mate. That’s until her mother’s actions call the unwanted attention of the council, who may yet decide Manon is unfit to be matched to anyone… This was a gripping and sinister opener to the series, and I can’t wait to see what happens next.

After hearing about the author’s inspiration for the book, I had to find out more about L M Nathan herself.

    Enter the 5 Random Questions!

Have you ever had a ghostly encounter?

I was lucky enough to stay in John Osborne’s house recently and was told he had a habit of making his presence known. I went to bed and was falling asleep when my phone launched itself across the room with some force. I was petrified and fully believed it was the playwright, as angry as he ever had been, here to reckon with me. In the morning, I realised the whole floor was on a slant and it had probably just slid off, catapulted by the angle of the bedside table!

What’s something people are always surprised to learn about you?

When I was at university, I tried to teach myself guitar. To this day, I can still only play about five chords but you’d be surprised how many songs that means I can take a passing shot at…

You have one day until the world ends. What are you going to do?

Read! I often tell my kids ‘If I never do anything other than read, I won’t consider my time wasted.’ But I don’t get enough time to read, so I wouldn’t want to waste what was left doing anything else.

If you had a magic ticket to see any band in the world, what would you see?

The Stone Roses at Spike Island in 1990. I was too young to even know it was happening at the time. I was only 11 and probably hadn’t even heard of The Stone Roses at that time. But they became the soundtrack to my teens, and I wish I had been there, on that reclaimed toxic waste dump, to witness it.

If you could be famous for something other than writing, what would it be?

I wanted to be an actress growing up, but I wasn’t very good. I did manage to perform at the Bristol Old Vic once, but it was sort of by default. My university was staging a production of Hello Dolly and needed a 70-strong chorus. You didn’t even have to audition – they let anybody be in it.

  • 5 Random Questions with Helen Comerford, author of The Love Interest

In my June newsletter (catch up HERE if you missed it) I interviewed Helen Comerford about her brilliant YA superhero romcom, The Love Interest, which was released earlier this month by Bloomsbury. In it, 17-year-old Jenna has just been rescued by brand-new superhero Blaze, and the world now expects her to play the part of his love interest – something Jenna has zero interest in doing. But will the Villains’ offer to her be any more enticing..? This has big Marvel vibes, a kickass heroine, and is definitely one to add to your summer reading list!

After asking the author all about her debut in my newsletter interview, I wanted to dig a little deeper… and weirder.

    Enter the 5 Random Questions!

Have you ever had a celebrity encounter?

I worked in the theatre for over a decade, so I’ve met a few celebs. Maybe the most interesting was David Hasselhoff. I helped out with ‘A Night with David Hasselhoff’ at the O2 and the very, very excited audience invaded the stage!

Other than writing, what’s your dream job?

Strangely, I’ve always thought that there’s a Helen in a parallel universe who’s a Careers Advisor. I’m such a know it all, I love trying to help people with courses, applications and career paths.

You have one hour to hide a body. What are you going to do?

I’d probably go full theatre. Get some makeup on them, some dark glasses, a party wig and make it look like they’re sleeping off a fun night …

Have you ever had your fortune told, and did it come true?

Three days hike from my village in Wales, there’s an old lady in a hillside cottage. For an offering of a Starbucks Frappuccino and bara brith, she will look into your future. She has eyes misted with age and a voice that cut me to my core when she said, ‘Don’t make stuff up on author interviews. It’s not big and it’s not clever.’

I’m a bit of a sceptic to be honest. I once had my tarot done at a festival I was in charge of and the psychic (who I had booked) told me I was a leader and a great organiser – that’s put me off fortune tellers a bit.

What’s a place you’ve never been but always wanted to visit?

The Arctic Circle. I managed to miss the Northern Lights when they visited in South Wales in May, so it’s been bumped right up my list.

    About Helen Comerford

Helen writes funny and fantastical tales, with diverse casts of characters, for children and young adults. She is fuelled by a love of all things super-powered, feminism, and chocolate raisins.

Helen spent a decade as a theatre stage manager, walking and talking very quietly backstage in theatres around the country. Her time working at Shakespeare’s Globe, and with Wise Children Theatre Company, cemented her love of theatre and allowed her to travel around the world looking for stories. After squeezing her writing into days off and train journeys, Helen left the touring life to settle in South Wales and dedicate herself to writing joyful (and ridiculous) books.

When she’s not writing, you can find her hiking around the Welsh countryside with her dog, Cocoa.

Find out more about Helen and her writing by visiting her website, and by following her on Twitter/X and Instagram.

  • Blackfin Sky 10th anniversary interview with Penny Thomas, Publisher at Firefly Press

Penny Thomas, Publisher at Firefly Press, was the first editor I ever worked with, and I’m delighted to be able to share this interview today to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the publication of our first collaboration – my debut YA novel, Blackfin Sky

(This interview was first published in my newsletter earlier this month – sign up if you’d like to be the first to find out about all my latest book news, giveaways and interviews.)

Kat: Blackfin Sky was among the first titles you published in 2014, and was your first ever YA novel. What made you choose it from all your submissions?

Penny: We just fell in love with everything about Blackfin Sky: It had an incredible hook – a girl called Skylar who turns up in school and is told she died three months ago – and a wonderfully weird and uncanny world. And a great voice: it was a no-brainer really.

Kat seeing Blackfin Sky in a bookshop for the first time ever 10 years ago

My particular favourite elements, as well as Sky herself, were the fact the gulls would never land there, no one went in or out, and the wishing well that stole coins from your pocket as you walked past – awesome! I remember negotiating with your agent, Molly, as I was on the train to London. It was the first time I’d had such a conversation for Firefly, and was trying so hard to sound professional and not like I was swaying backwards and forward at the back of the carriage!

Kat: It’s now 11 years since you established Firefly Press – and it’s been wonderful to see Firefly going from strength to strength over the years! What made you decide to set up your own publishing house? And what are some of the highlights you’ve experienced since then?

Penny: I think children’s books were always my favourite read – I have an English degree, I can read adult books – but reading, and also editing children’s books was where I was happiest; I was probably only pretending to be an editor of adult books before that. There was no publisher in Wales at the time dedicated to only children’s and YA books in English, and I didn’t want to move back to England/ London with my kids in school in Cardiff etc. Luckily while thinking about it, I met Janet Thomas at Honno Welsh Women’s Press who also wanted to try a children’s list, having worked in children’s books in London previously. So as no one else was doing it, we decided to have a go ourselves. The Books Council of Wales got wind of our thoughts, and by a happy coincidence, there was some Welsh Government money available for some children’s books from Wales at the time. We tendered for this and were successful, and with this and some family backing were were able to get underway! We really did start from scratch, but the wonderful authors and colleagues who came our way made it all work from the start!

Highlights have been Blackfin Sky, obviously – I still remember the first review coming in and how delighted we were that other people felt the same as us!

Our first Hay Festival, seeing actual children actually queueing up to meet our authors and buy our books was wonderful too.

Also publishing Jennifer Killick, who went from unknown to bestselling author of Crater Lake, was a privilege. The award wins for the Carnegie and the Branford Boase were highlights of course, as is winning the Wales small press of the year award at the Nibbies four times in the last five years! But really, every book is a joy – and working with all our talented and really hardworking authors is just the best job there is!

Kat & Penny at the Firefly Press 10th Anniversary party in March 2024

Kat: With your books having won the Branford Boase Award in 2016 (Aubrey and the Terrible Yoot by Horatio Clare; illustrated by Jane Matthews) and the Carnegie Award in 2023 (The Blue Book of Nebo by Manon Stefan Ros), Firefly Press is clearly publishing books which make an impact. What trends are you seeing in YA now, and what kinds of submissions are you looking for?

Penny: We’ve seen a few trends since we started, but at the moment I think YA is on an upswing, which is lovely to see, as I think it has been in the doldrums for four or five years previous to that. People are looking for ‘romantasy’ and diverse and own voice writing, and it’s so important to include as wide a range of experience and subject matter as possible in YA lists going forwards. Personally I think that people want fun reads, spooky, romantic, epic etc, but also real quality writing, such as Nebo, or Grow and Play by Luke Palmer. It’s not a market that needs to get overstuffed with look-a-like books or issue books, as readers may tire of these, but quality will always come through!

Kat: What’s on the horizon for Firefly Press in 2024 and beyond?

Our list is bigger and I think better than ever, and we have increased our staff and office space, so with the Carnegie win just last year we are ambitious for the future. But I think Firefly will remain a small, but hopefully beautifully formed independent publisher from Wales, publishing real quality and fun fiction, with a huge commitment to reading for pleasure, and encouraging new readers this way. Forthcoming titles range from the 7-9s Snails of the Unexpected, by Terrie Chilvers (of Michael the Amazing Mindreading Sausage Dog fame) to a terrific Port Talbot-based YA from Zillah Bethell called Vanishing Edge, with some terrific middle grade in there too, such as Flame Chasers from Julie Pike and Starspill by Catherine Fisher… I’m hoping we can keep doing what we are doing and enjoying publishing great books!

Kat: For the writers out there, what’s the best way to submit a manuscript to you?

Penny: We are often closed to new manuscripts as we are so oversubscribed. However like everyone else we keep our eyes open. Best for everyone to watch our website to see if we have submissions windows or competitions, which do come round every so often! Then work out if your book really would fit with the Firefly list and send in your covering letter, synopsis and first few chapters, and we will do the rest!

    More about Penny Thomas

Penny has always been a compulsive reader and was never out of the library at school or in Harpenden, Herts, where she grew up. She took a degree in English Language and Literature at Keble
College, Oxford, and worked as an editorial assistant in London before moving to Cardiff to train as a journalist in 1988.
After fourteen years in regional journalism, and two kids, she took a proofreading course and realised publishing was for her.
She has since freelanced for many great presses and was fiction editor for literary publisher Seren Books for 11 years. She never got over that early love of books, so Firefly is a long-cherished ambition. Books for children and
teenagers have moved on since those dark ages of course, although classics remain, but she is determined that Firefly books will inspire readers in just the same way.
